EU Statement in the OSCE on the case against human rights defender Evgeniy Zhovtis

The EU has learnt that the complaint filed on behalf of Kazakh human rights defender and member of the ODIHR Panel of Experts on Freedom of Peaceful Assembly, Evgeniy Zhovtis, in order to protest against procedural violations made during the appeal hearing of his criminal trial was turned down by the supervisory college of the Almaty regional court on December 10.

Unresolved problems with the human rights and civil liberties

On March 11 the MCC left the suspension of the funding for roads within the MCA-Armenia Compact in place. The initial suspension in June 2008 was motivated by unresolved problems with the human rights and civil liberties and the last decision not to lift suspension was due to insufficient progress in solution of these problems.
